Reconnect with Nature at Daisy Chain

The Joy of Family Holidays in the Great Outdoors

In today’s fast-paced, always-on world, it’s no surprise that more families are seeking out holidays that offer something a little different.  Something slower, simpler and more restorative. Nature based family holidays in the UK are booming and at Daisy Chain, our lakeside holiday home in the Cotswolds, we understand exactly why.

Every week, families arrive carrying the invisible weight of work stress, school schedules and never ending daily life admin. Within hours, something shifts. Shoulders drop. Laughter bubbles up. Bedtime becomes easier. Screens are forgotten. Time slows down.

And by the time they leave? They’re reconnected: with nature, with each other and with themselves.

Whether you’re planning a countryside break with grandparents, a shared stay with another family, or a reunion weekend with your closest friends, Daisy Chain is more than a place to sleep.  It’s a setting designed to nurture, inspire and ground you in the simple joy of being in nature.

The demand for UK based, child-friendly countryside holidays has skyrocketed in recent years – and for good reason. A growing number of families are choosing to swap airport queues and theme parks for fresh air, forest trails and dark skies where they can actually see the stars. Nature offers something we all crave, yet rarely get enough of: space. Space to play, space to rest and space to just be.

According to VisitBritain, over 65% of holidaymakers now prioritise access to nature when booking a UK break. Families in particular are looking for destinations that feel like a true escape from the routine – places where kids can run free, parents can breathe and everyone can reconnect.

That’s exactly what we offer at Daisy Chain, our lakeside retreat nestled in the heart of the Cotswold Lakes (formerly known as Cotswold Water Park). Here, nature is your playground – and it starts the moment you arrive.

Sunrise from your bed on your family holiday but the lake on a nature reserve

There’s something magical about opening your bedroom curtains and seeing the still surface of a lake, gently kissed by morning light. At Daisy Chain, your day begins not with a car engine or an alarm, but with birdsong, big skies and the gentle rustle of reeds.

Mums often tell us that the balcony becomes their sanctuary. With a warm coffee in hand and the children happily spotting ducks or playing inside, it’s the perfect setting for a mindful moment before the day begins. The uninterrupted lake views act like a balm for the soul – calming, grounding and quietly beautiful.

This peaceful start is more than a luxury. It sets the tone for a day shaped by slow adventure, shared laughter  and time reconnecting as a family.

Birdwatch from your balcony on your Cotswold Family Holiday in nature

For many of our guests, one of the best parts of staying at Daisy Chain is that there’s no need to pack the car and plan big days out. The joy of nature is literally on your doorstep.

Here are just a few ways families can enjoy the great outdoors without ever leaving the estate:

– Take out the Canadian canoe: paddle across the water and get up close to wildlife in a whole new way. A trip in the Canadian canoe is a gentle adventure that’s suitable for beginners and always a hit with kids.  We have special cushions that nestle in the base of the Canadian canoe so little ones can sit low down and feel more secure.

– Use the Merlin app from the balcony at Daisy Chain to see how many birds can be heard.  It opens up a whole new world and will have your children listening in a way you never thought possible!

– Stargaze after dark – with so little light pollution, the night sky comes alive. Sit on the balcony and see who can spot the first shooting star.  We love setting up our mobile phone to film a timelapse of the night sky showing the stars leaving arcing trails across the sky as the earth rotates.  Stellarium is a great app for helping to identify the constellations and planets that can be seen.

– Enjoy a lakeside picnic – Let lunch last for hours, with plenty of space for little ones to run and explore nearby.  You could even take this up a notch by travelling across the lake in the canoe with your picnic on board for a real adventure.

Because nature is the entertainment, there’s no need for schedules or screens. Every generation finds something to love here and no-one ever says, “I’m bored.”

Toys at your lakeside family retreat

Daisy Chain isn’t just family-friendly – it has been carefully designed around the idea of making countryside holidays with children joyful and effortless.

We’ve taken care of the details so you can focus on making memories:

– Two cots, two highchairs, and baby monitors provided.

– Child-sized tableware for relaxed mealtimes.

– Blackout blinds for better sleep (hallelujah!).

– Bath toys and non-slip steps to make bath time a breeze.

– Games, books, puzzles, and toys for every age group.

We know that travelling with young children can be a logistical challenge. That’s why we’ve created a space where parents can genuinely relax, knowing everything they need is already here.

Older kids can embrace a bit of independence – going to the tennis court for a quick game, seeking out the table tennis table for a competitive tournament or paddling across the lake with you watching on. Teenagers appreciate the tranquility (even if they won’t always admit it) and grandparents love having everyone together in a wonderfully calm setting.

Tranquility for adults in nature in the Cotswolds on a wellness retreat

Daisy Chain isn’t just for families: it’s a haven for adults craving headspace too.

Whether you’re planning a wellness weekend with friends or bringing grandparents along for some intergenerational joy, the experience is just as restorative.

Many guests tell us that even a short break feels like a reset. The combination of fresh air, unhurried pace and meaningful connection works wonders for the nervous system.

If you’re a mum in need of rest, imagine this:

Evenings by the wood burner, chatting with friends over a glass of wine as the stars come out.

Morning yoga on the balcony as the sun rises.

Spa access just a short walk away: indoor and outdoor pools, steam room and optional treatments.

Afternoon reading time by the lake while the kids play.

This is your permission to unwind. You’ve earned it.

When you do want to explore, the Cotswolds is bursting with family-friendly outdoor adventures—all just a short drive away:

A breathtaking forest park that’s magical year-round. Kids love the Gruffalo trail, treetop walkway, and leaf-kicking paths. Bring a picnic and stay all day.

Ideal for animal lovers. With rare breed animals, tractor rides, play barns, and seasonal activities, it’s an unforgettable day out.

One of the best spots nearby for its buggy friendly trails, it comes complete with follies and long-reaching vistas.

Sandy shores, safe swimming zones, paddle boarding, and inflatables galore. A hit with energetic children and teenagers alike.

We believe in offering countryside holidays that don’t cost the earth – literally.

From solar panels to eco-friendly cleaning products, sustainable furniture choices to line dried bed linen  Daisy Chain is designed with sustainability in mind.

By choosing a UK holiday over an international flight, you’re already making a positive impact. Families are able to choose a sustainable holiday that’s rooted in values they believe in.

A holiday in Cotswold Lakes with your family to immerse in nature

We’re honoured to welcome so many wonderful families through our doors each year. Here’s what some of them have said:

Daisy Chain was perfect for our family from 9 to 71 years old with two dogs. The accommodation was perfect for our needs with high quality equipment and linen. We all used the on-site facilities particularly the tennis court, multi- sports court, swimming pool and gym. The canoe was an extra bonus and we loved going out on the lake and seeing the wildlife: it was so peaceful. (Guests August 2024)

Daisy Chain has a wonderful view across the lake – we used their canoe a couple of times which made some lovely memories. The lake is teaming with wildlife so you could easily lose a couple of hours staring out at it. We also love the swimming pool on site – it’s nice and warm and it feels like a true spa.
