Supermoon Lunar Eclipse

Supermoon Lunar Eclipse

Tomorrow, when the moon rises it will be a supermoon. A supermoon occurs when the moon is near its minimum distance from earth, causing it to appear about 8% larger in the sky. In the early hours of Monday morning (between 2am and 3:30am) there will be a Supermoon Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse is when the Earth, Sun and Moon are almost exactly in line and the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, so that the shadow of the Earth falls across the full moon.

From Earth, we may see the moon turn a rusty blood red colour. For a great video explaining how a Supermoon happens visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKAw_wrIr5s&sns=em

We took this picture of the moon on Saturday evening – just one day before the Supermoon.

Will you be getting up early on Monday morning to see the lunar eclipse?

Amazing Supermoon

Amazing Supermoon

The supermoon has been looking amazing over the lakes at the Lower Mill Estate this week, looming orange and misty above the trees and dramatic as the clouds swirl past it.

We had fun yesterday experimenting with taking photos of it…not easy as there was more cloud viewing than moon viewing!

For more information about the supermoon this is an interesting article http://1.usa.gov/1BaBw9O
