The Enchanted Christmas event at Westonbirt Arboretum brings the magnificent trees of the arboretum to life in a whole new way. The illuminated trail takes you through a mile of the arboretum creating a magical Christmasy scene. the trail opens at 5pm each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening from 27th November to 20th December. It you are planning to visit on a Saturday you will need to pre-book as it gets very busy.
During the winter we sometimes sleep with the curtains open at Daisy Chain so that we can watch the stars in the darkness. At 2am this morning Jupiter, Mars and Venus were shining so brightly in a clear sky that they were reflecting in the still lake. As our last guests wrote in the visitors book, "On clear nights the start are great" I took this photo from the decking just outside the bedroom.
The ISS is showing really clearly at the moment – this evening it will be visible over the Lower Mill Estate just after 10pm. For the timing in your location check the link in +Matthew Lambley's post. Another great photo Matthew – thanks for sharing!
The International Space Station A big bank of sea fog covered Weymouth tonight and I just managed to get to a hill on the outskirts by Winterbourne Steepleton where the sky was clear to catch the ISS (International Space Station) go over at 9.25. The times for its orbits given on the NASA website is not surprisingly very accurate.: http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/#.VSwzAdzF91U It is easy to see it with the naked eye. This shot was taken with a normal lens at 20 seconds exposure.
A fabulous night sky this evening with a crescent moon and the rest of the moon faintly lit by light reflected from the earth and the conjunction of Mars and Venus. Great to look at and clear skies to enjoy it!
