Where does the River Thames start?

Where does the River Thames start?

The most common topic of converstation at The Thames Head Inn near Kemble is not politics, or even sport, but rather the source of the River Thames. The pub takes its name from the place, about half a mile away, where the river begins its 154 mile long journey to London Bridge. The source of the Thames is not quite as simple as that – as the river is ground water fed, the precise source depends on the ground water level, and as such can vary by a few miles between summer and winter.

The Thames Head Inn serves a varied menu of fresh home cooked food and visitors can enjoy a drink or meal enjoying relaxed atmosphere of the pub, complete with its various nooks and crannies and open fires or outside in the garden.

Beavers on Lower Mill Estate

In 2005 six European beavers were released to Flagham Fen on the Lower Mill Estate in the Cotswolds. Since their arrival they have thrived, building beaver lodges, felling trees, digging a network of mini canals for easy transportation of logs and generally being as busy as, well, beavers!

It is a real treat to see the beavers – they are nocturnal so just before dawn or just after dusk are the most likely times of day to see them. As they glide through the water you spot the characteristic 'v' wave coming from the front of their head. Sometimes they turn and face you, staring into your eyes before arching their backs and diving silently under the water, where they can remain for up to 15 minutes at a time. It is a magical sight.

The linked video is a compilation of some of our sightings.

Royal International Air Tattoo

Royal International Air Tattoo

Each year the world's largest military airshow takes place at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, just 12 miles from Daisy Chain. This year it promises to be another spectacular event. The Air Tattoo will be hosting the official celebrations for the 50th season of the Red Arrows who first formed at the Fairford Base in 1965. During the Tattoo visitors will be treated to a thrilling flying display including fast jets, giant transporters, historic aircraft and much much more!

Last year we watched some of the display in the distance from the balcony at Daisy Chain. In the weeks leading up to the display visiting aircraft can be seen over the Lower Mill Estate practising their manoeuvers.

The Royal International Air Tattoo takes place from 11th – 13th July 2014. For more information visit http://www.airtattoo.com
