House Martins on the Lower Mill Estate

The eaves of the houses on the Lower Mill Estate provide perfect nesting positions for House Martins who migrate over from Africa for the summer. The Nature Reserve is perfect for them – plenty of lakes for them to collect insects over and muddy puddles which make perfect nesting material. Our guests last week watched the House Martins collecting mud to build into their nest made from hundreds of clumps of wet mud mixed with straw and grass. We have some nesting under the eaves at Daisy Chain. Last year there were over 180 nests on the Lower Mill Estate!
