Orchids in the Cotswolds

Orchids in the Cotswolds

May is such a lovely month – and made all the more beautiful by all the orchids popping up around the Estate and at Clattinger Farm – next door to the Lower Mill Estate.

Otters on Lower Moor Farm, Cotswold Water Park

Otters on Lower Moor Farm, Cotswold Water Park

Some of the most magical moments we have spent on the Lower Mill Estate have been watching beavers and otters. Lower Moor Farm, which is the farm next to the Lower Mill Estate has a wonderful group of otters which are often seen. There is an easy walk around the nature reserve, and if you take up position in the hide you might be lucky to see them yourself. This fabulous photo was taken a few days ago by local wildlife photographer Dave Soons.

Little Egrets on the Lower Mill Estate

Little Egrets on the Lower Mill Estate

Exploring Somerford Lagoon on the Lower Mill Estate in the Cotswold Water Park by canoe is a great way to get up close to the wildlife. As we canoed around the lake on Sunday there were lots of egrets enjoying fishing in the shallows. These 3 took to the air to show off their yellow wellies beautifully.

Orchids at Clattinger Farm

Orchids at Clattinger Farm

Two weeks ago when we visited Clattinger Farm, a fabulous lowland meadow of international importance for its hay meadow wildflowers, it was filled with cowslips and snakeshead fritillaries. We looked for orchids and there were just a small handful – in the sort of numbers that you would expect to find in usual places where orchids grow. We returned to the field this weekend and it is now overflowing with orchids in spectacular numbers – such a rare and beautiful sight. They will continue to flower during May and into June.

Clattinger Farm is the next farm to the Lower Mill Estate and well worth a visit during your Cotswold Family Holiday.

A Winter scene in the Cotswolds

A Winter scene in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds are an amazing area just waiting to be explored. This winter scene, photographed three weeks ago, was captured in the Village of Down Ampney which amongst other things is famous for being the birthplace of the compser Ralph Vaughan Williams. I'm sure we'll see more hard frosts before the winter is out!

Sunday Sunrise

A sunrise from the archives this morning. Last Sunday was so misty that the swans took the chance for a lie in. Occasionally they would lift their heads to have a look around and make sure they wern't missing out on anything then they would tuck them down again. On the morning this was taken the ducks were wide awake to enjoy the colours!

Sunday Sunrise

Sunday Sunrise

The sun seems to be hiding pretty well this morning but the view is still beautiful. It's very misty outside – the birds are calling very loudly to each other – maybe they're playing hide and seek! We'll have to try not to lose the children when we go out later!

Clear night skies

Clear night skies

The beautifully clear sunny days are leading to amazing night skies. Staying on the Lower Mill Estate is a great time to appreciate the night sky without the usual light pollution that comes from towns and cities. Wrap up warm, grap a chair and sit on the balcony and watch the moon reflected in the lake.
